The Breakers’ historic Ocean Course re-opens as a modern ode to heritage; its makeover by famed golf course architect Rees Jones

The full-scale renovation of the historic Ocean Course at The Breakers Palm Beach, which just re-opened late December 2018, was driven by the ongoing balance of preservation and modernization. Renowned golf course architect Rees Jones enhanced the overall experience of Florida’s oldest golf course to an exciting new level, by improving the course’s playability while maintaining its character.  Jones also re-designed the resort’s sister championship course, The Breakers Rees Jones® Course, in 2006.

Originally laid out by Alexander H. Findlay in 1897 and then redesigned in 2000 by Brian Silva, the new Ocean Course makeover included the following specs:

  • New green complexes and expanded with compelling undulations to heighten the interest of even the most loyal golfers
  • Entire turf replaced with salt-tolerant grass (Platinum TE™ Paspalum), ideally suited to the course’s seaside location, while the greens remain TifEagle Bermuda
  • The resort upgraded its trailblazing, reverse osmosis irrigation system to further bolster water conservation.  First built in 2000, this on-site deep well and water facility converts undrinkable water into irrigation water, pumping it from 1,100-feet deep to produce over 500,000 gallons of irrigation water per day.
  • Expansion of the John Webster Golf Academy — the building more than doubled in size and now has two teaching bays and a new putting studio featuring the latest instructional technology
  • New water features
  • Contemporary wooden bulkheads
  • Additional native landscaping reflecting the sub-tropical setting

The entire 18-hole layout embodies Jones’ philosophy to create and restore courses for all players, from beginners to PGA professionals, who favor different degrees of risk with every shot.  Elevated to its best potential, the iconic Ocean Course is a more perfect complement to the contemporary Breakers Rees Jones® Course (situated 10 miles west of the hotel), providing golfers with two distinctive settings to enjoy.  Both championship courses are available exclusively to The Breakers’ hotel guests and club members.
